We carried out extensive research within Birmingham and other cities, focusing on contemporary retail culture and the city’s heritage. The logotype is based on the letter forms on road signs visible around Birmingham and a set of ‘B’ symbols were produced as interchangeable marks.
After creating the logo-type and initial marketing collateral which included; business cards, flyers, posters, t-shirts, internal and external signage, we set about creating a 26 character, upper-case letter set. This was then applied to further materials including a website, hoardings and press adverts.
The brief for We Are Birmingham was quite complicated and had to take in a wide spectrum of ideas and concepts to be successful. What Wild Ilk managed to do was come up with something simple and striking that both was in keeping with Birmingham's rich cultural heritage and at the same time forward thinking.
